Bhanga Junction is the centerpiece of the Padma Bridge Rail Link Project, serving as a strategic hub that connects Dhaka with the southwestern regions of Bangladesh, including Jessore, Rajbari, and the Payra Port. Often referred to as Bangladesh's first "Iconic" railway station, the project is designed with a modern, international aesthetic that mirrors contemporary Chinese transit hubs.
The building is a massive three-storey structure engineered to handle high-capacity passenger flow while serving as a landmark of the country's infrastructure modernization.
Project Overview
- Location: Bamunkanda, Bhanga Upazila, Faridpur District.
- Client: Bangladesh Railway.
- Project Type: Iconic Railway Junction & Transit Hub.
- Total Area: ~6,516 SQM (Station Building).
- Budget: Approximately Tk 200–283 Crore.
- Status: Operational (Inaugurated October 2023; Full Jessore link expected by mid-2024).
Structural & Façade Engineering
The Bhanga Junction building is technically distinct from traditional Bangladeshi stations, utilizing advanced building envelope systems and specialized structural steelwork.
- Façade Systems: The building features a high-performance Semi-unitized Façade System. This continuous system provides a sleek, glass-dominant exterior that ensures natural lighting for the massive internal concourse.
- Integrated Skylights & Canopies: The design incorporates a sophisticated Skylight and Canopy System, which provides weather protection for the platforms while creating a bright, airy atmosphere for passengers.
- Multi-Level Layout: * Ground Floor: Houses the railway tracks and platforms (12 platforms in total), allowing for seamless "through-train" movement.
- Upper Floors: Dedicated to passenger lounges, ticket counters, commercial spaces, and administrative offices.
- Structural Steel: The station utilizes a heavy steel structure to support the expansive roof spans and the iconic "Chinese-style" silhouette, which required rigorous analysis for both dead loads and environmental pressures.
