The Sufia Kamal National Public Library in Shahbagh, Dhaka, is currently undergoing a transformative Tk 600 crore modernization project. This initiative replaces the historic 1950s structure—originally designed by the legendary architect Mazharul Islam—with a state-of-the-art, multi-dimensional complex.
Designed by Cubeinside Design Ltd and Dcon Design Studio, the new complex is envisioned as a "cultural hub" that balances traditional reading spaces with advanced digital infrastructure.
Project Overview
- Location: 10 Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Shahbagh, Dhaka.
- Client: Department of Public Libraries, Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
- Architects: Abu Anas Faisal (Team Lead), Cubeinside Design Ltd & Dcon Design Studio.
- Status: Under Construction (Demolition started April 2022; Completion expected late 2027).
- Budget: Approximately Tk 561–600 Crore.
Structural & Façade Engineering Highlights
The new design is notable for its technical complexity, moving away from the "red-brick" aesthetic of the past toward a transparent, high-tech silhouette.
- Façade System: A sophisticated Fin Supported Façade System characterizes the new structures, providing a high degree of transparency and structural rhythm.
- Innovative Steel Structure: The project features a 200-foot unsupported steel structure, cited as one of the most challenging engineering feats of its kind in Bangladesh.
- Brahmi Lipi Inscriptions: The glass façade of the e-library will feature inscriptions of characters from the Brahmi Lipi, symbolically rooting the modern glass architecture in the region's ancient literacy heritage.
- Thermal Management: The annexe and storage buildings are strategically positioned to the west to mitigate heat gain, using a large void for natural ventilation.
